…and so it begins
What does?
Great question! For the last four years, I’ve had this passion developing for the craft of woodworking. Past hobbies have made an effort to steal my attention away for a few months at a time, but as interest in those old hobbies fade, I always find my way back to making sawdust. Four years in and I have finally developed a confidence in my work to show it to the world and offer to build pieces for all who are interested.
As with any hobby, woodworking has a niche to fit everyone, but what I’ve found is you have to dabble in several of them in order to find what most interests you. I tried live edge slab work, small custom clocks, cutting boards, tables of all kinds and a variety of other pieces but, what I’ve found I really enjoy creating is unique tables and consoles that represent a blend of contemporary and mid-century modern styles.
The most enjoyable challenge in woodworking for me is coming up with a unique design and then trying to figure out how you’re going to shape and join wood to make it functional and beautiful. Sometimes this means changing your original plan in the middle of the build. Talk about keeping it interesting! For someone who strives for routine and schedule, this aspect has taught me patience, adaptation, and how to make decisions on the fly.
So let me ask you…
What are you passionate about? Why? What makes it enjoyable for you? What’s one trait you have learned from it?
